Introduction

"Compassionate teachers fill a void left by working parents who aren't able to devote enough attention to their children. Teachers don't just teach; they can be vital personalities who help young people to mature, to understand the world and to understand themselves. A good education consists of much more than useful facts and marketable skills."

~Charles Platt

It is my hope that this electronic representation of my recent student teaching experience will adequately represent some of the extraordinary learning and teaching experiences I have had during this enlightening semester. The process of thoughtful reflection that went into writing the material in this portfolio allowed me to re-experience many of the feelings and revelations that were brand new to me a just a few weeks ago. Even a careful review of this material will not reveal the long hours of prep time, the tears resulting from self-perceived failures, the anger at being told I was wrong, or the soaring of my heart when I knew my students had enthusiastically embraced the knowledge I had tried to impart that day, but I hope you will at least get sense of what the experience was like from an academic perspective.

I am so grateful to my cooperative teacher, Vince Hayes, my professor, Dr. Todd Dinkelman and the terrific students at Duluth High School for the contribution they made to my life and learning during the last semester. My student teaching experience not only reinforced that I have made the right career choice it created a superb starting point to my teaching career.
